Kristie and Lawrence Brunetti

When I saw Kristie out planting with one of her three boys by her side, working her way down that steep hill of a front yard, I knew she must be a gardener at heart.  Kristie admits to leaving the mowing of the double hill to the pros but she enjoys adding in the seasonal flowers, which are her favorite part of the yard.

Kristie and Lawrence moved to Lake Highlands two years ago. They have three boys under the age of eight and work full-time plus keep up with all of the kids’ activities and Kristie still manages to find time to keep her yard looking great.

According to Kristie, their back yard hasn’t seen much love since they moved in so their next gardening project is complete back yard makeover.  I am not sure exactly when they will find the time to do it squeezed in between soccer games, carpooling and work but I bet when it’s done it’s going to look amazing!

Jennifer and Ben Ross

Drive by the Ross house as quickly as you can to admire the blooming tree in their front yard. It’s gorgeous, but it won’t last forever. That tree, in fact, is why their yard is this month’s winner. It’s just too bad that all the blooming trees, bulbs and springtime flowers can’t last all year long.

Jennifer and Ben moved into the neighborhood in August of 2007. They chose Lake Highlands for their first home because Jennifer is a first grade teacher at L.H. Elementary School. Talk about an easy commute!

Yard of the MonthThe Rosses do all their own lawn care and enjoy gardening, so much so that they have purchased a plot in the Lake Highlands Community Garden where they plan to grow vegetables.

They like to shop at Calloway’s or Lowes, and make their decision based on convenience and their budget. Calloway’s has quality plants and they get good advice there, but they also shop at Lowe’s because it’s fast and easy and a little less expensive.

Betty and John Danielson

Betty and John moved to Lake Highlands on Mother’s Day of 2001 and promptly won Yard of the Month. It’s a family effort that brought them the award again. Betty’s mother, Ruth Hanson makes the master landscape plan and chooses the plants, John does the digging, Ruth does the planting and Betty is responsible for keeping everything trimmed and pretty and watered.

Ruth says gardening is her hobby and you can tell how much she enjoys doing it. As we talked about the yard, she told me of her plans for Monkey Grass around the trees, more Lavender plants and Mexican Begonias that act like perennials. The Camilla bush is getting ready to bloom its beautiful Hawaiian Punch pink flowers and the pansies and cabbage plants make the prettiest boarder for their walkway.

Betty and John have a son who is a sophomore at Lake Highlands and a sweet dog named Rascal. They are also incredibly lucky to have a mother whose hobby is gardening!

Susanne Rettig

Susanne Rettig and Chris Brumley of Brumley Gardens make an incredible team.  One look at Susanne’s yard and you can tell why.  It is beautiful every month but in the winter the bright green grass and yellow pansies are an oasis of color in the midst of the brown seasonal hibernation of most of our yards.

Susanne has worked with Chris Brumley for many years. They discuss the color scheme and timing and Chris and his team perform the labor.  That pretty green grass is the work of “over seeding” with Winter Rye grass.

There is a Weeping Cherry Tree in the backyard that flowers in the spring. Her favorite part of her yard is this tree and her wooden swing that provides the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beauty of this tree and the flowers that surround it.

Amy Whitten

Amy Whitten moved to Lake Highlands in 1996 but has been enjoying our neighborhood for many years prior to that as a St. Patrick’s parishioner.

McCree is a busy street but you can’t help slowing down to admire Amy’s front yard as you drive by. The Japanese Maple is in full color right now and is truly a show stopper. When asked about her favorite part of the landscape, she says it’s actually her back yard that she is most proud of. Pictured here are both the front and the back.

November 2008 Yard of the MonthAmy does all the yard work herself, the mowing, trimming, planting and maintenance. She loves changing the décor to fit the season and has this theme prominent in both the front and the back yards.

Plant shopping is done at Brumley Gardens where she gets helpful tips and advice from Chris Brumley. She also likes to shop at Home Depot. She just planted Pansy’s and Cyclamen and is looking forward to putting out the Christmas lights soon.

Marge & Dave Cooper

When the Coopers moved here, their home was one of the very first built on Queenswood.  Greenfield was literally a “field of green” rather than a street, and Kingsley (now Walnut Hill) had only two lanes. If you really want to use your imagination, think about Kingsley stopping at Fieldcrest. That was it - just land from that intersection west.

Anyone can see that Marge and Dave Cooper have taken great pride in their home and yard and have been very happy living here for the last 43 years. They have raised a son and a daughter and now have five grandchildren ranging in ages from 12 to 20 years old.

When it comes to the yard work, Dave says that Marge is the “landscape engineer” and he is merely the “worker”. Marge has an eye for décor and really enjoys collecting decorations for the different seasons.  Together they plant and work on the garden and then put out the various art of the season.

The Coopers shop at Brumley Gardens and Calloways and listen to Neil Sperry on KRLD on the weekend mornings for gardening advice.
